Legend of Legaia - Part 10 - Fat Fingers and Pepe
| pretty garden |
Welcome back to more Legend of Legaia. Last time, we visited the mist infested town of Jeremi, and restored the town from its terror. Today, we will explore the newly freed Jeremi. But before we do all that: we got a Fire Book II from the last fight.
Don't do what I did and learn this after doing this part
Give it to Vahn to teach him a new hyper art.
We head down the elevator and are greeted by the mayor who thanks our heroes for driving the mist away. As we follow him outside, we are greeted be even more people who thank us. One awkward moment later, our heroes get fully rested off screen. Before we leave the inn, we can talk to this lady.
She mentions a man named Zalan who’s asking for our help.
Let’s explore the town first.
By going to the bar (I think I called it a café last time…), we’ll see some people here. These people have lost family members from the mist and find themselves here.
This is a pretty neat detail I find, even in the first time playing: we’ve managed to rescue people from the mist, but it doesn’t guarantee happiness for them. Some people have lost loved ones from the mist, or – here’s a scary thought – they may have murdered their loved ones themselves as seru monsters. It’s an extra layer of this game’s story that makes it a bit more real and relatable.
I thought he was wearing a red cloak first time I played, but he's actually just that red
In the bar, we can find this drunkard at the very back. Turns out that this man’s not an ordinary bum, but used to train in the Biron Monastery. He can teach our heroes new arts: Cross Kick for Vahn, Bird Step for Noa, and Side Kick for Gala.
We can talk to the piano man, and he asks us a question. He asks us if he did anything terrible in the mist. Unless you call playing strange music terrible, I don’t think so…?
An interesting thing: if we do respond yes to that question, he starts grieving, and actually stays that way through the rest of the game. I think we’d ruin a man’s life by doing that…
As we explore more of the town, we can talk to more people. They mostly thank us, or mention Zalan.
This person in particular mentions how the mist came from the northwest. Perhaps there’s another mist generator over there…
With the mist gone, shops must be back up in business, so let’s check out the store.
There’s new armor for Vahn and a new weapon for Noa, though these equipment prices are getting pretty high…
There’s another merchant to the left of the weapons dealer, and they have items and accessories for sale. Note that they’re starting to sell healing flowers and door of winds.
Anyways, let’s check out this Zalan. We can find his place in the southwest corner of town.
He asks us a favor: to deliver a letter to his wife and son in the town of Vidna. The mist is still rampant outside of Jeremi, so our heroes are the only ones who can safely travel between towns. We agree to his request, and we embark back to the overworld. We need to deliver this letter to his wife Yuma and his son… Pepe.
Meme culture had me do a double take when I first read that name.
Fortunately for us, Vidna’s not too far away from Jeremi. Travel north of here, and we should spot the village pretty soon. But even with such a short distance, we’ll be encountering some new monsters:
We got some more recolors: Oak Slime is exactly like the slime we’ve encountered before. It has more HP this time around, and can still split itself into 2. Lip Kid is a recolor of the Lippian. It still has that kiss of death that can paralyze a party member, so beware. One thing I forgot to mention about Lippian that also applies with this monster is that they have pretty high speed. I’m not sure if that kiss of death has a fast activation rate, but I’ve had that move outspeed even Noa at one point.
Someone's been skipping leg day
Here’s another new monster we can face: Killer Bison. Not terrifyingly strong, but it takes a couple of hits to take down. It’s Hell’s Tackle can do a bit of damage.
a lot of gray monsters here, now that I look at it
One more monster recolor: Poisonous Worm. True to its name, it can cast venom on one party member. Otherwise, it’s an easy foe to take down.
As we cross the bridge to the other island, we can take a quick detour to the right. If we follow to the edge, we’ll find a sign marking a fishing spot!
However, we don’t have a rod to do anything about that. Let’s remember this place for later.
Eventually, we’ll reach Vidna. The first thing you’ll probably notice about this town are the huge windmills surrounding the town. Turns out this place has their own countermeasure against the mist!
We’ll find a tour guide (well, former tour guide) who can explain the main hotspots of Sebucus Islands for a small fee. I wanna learn more about the world’s lore, so why not? The guide explains that Vidna has a lot of geothermal energy, making the town a place for natural hot springs. The energy also powers the windmills, which coincidentally pushes the mist away from the town. The guide also gives us information about Octam, the place Hari instructed us to go. He mentions something about flying wagons. Wonder what that’s about. He also mentions that the Temple of Rem is situated there in Octam. We can also ask about Hari, but his description seems to be rather vague, as it is based on what he heard.
We can visit the inn right next to the tour guide, and we find another lady who can explain Octam for us for free. I think I just got swindled… We ask about the flying wagons in Octam, and she explains that there used to be giant seru that carried passengers from there to Karisto. Another topic we discuss is the Temple of Rem. We’ve already learned that it’s in Octam, but we also learn that Hari had the power to tell the prophecies of Rem. The mysteries of Octam and Hari start to build…
We can rest here, and as we do, Noa finds herself in yet another dream.
We hear the voice of Noa’s mother reaching out to her, but we hear another voice. The other voice is revealed as Noa’s father. They both tell her how they are trapped in the deepest reaches of the mist, and want to see their daughter again. Again, makes you wonder where exactly they are…
We wake up, and while we’re here, we can check the cupboard on the upper floor for a healing flower.
I’m pretty sure I’ve drilled it in at this point; check the cupboards for any items.
A man here tells us a place called the Gate of Shadows. Though, much like what we heard about Hari, the description of this place seems rather vague.
| 12000 G for a Mettle Ring?! |
An item store here will sell us some accessories. We’ve seen all these accessories before, but this is the first we’ve seen the Mettle Ring on sale, and holy smokes is it expensive.
As we explore Vidna, we can find a beach to the south.
insert Costa del Sol music here
It really seems that the people of Vidna have been living in peace for quite a while. Some people are even wearing seru, as the place is completely free of mist.
Quite a stark contrast to the rest of the world.
In another house we check out, we find a group of Biron monks in training. A lady spots our heroes and introduces herself as Sashia.
not sure if I like "The Message" spelled out in capitals like that
She is a priestess of the Temple of Rem, and she has been awaiting a group of Ra-seru wearers such as our heroes, according to Hari’s prophecy. Sashia was asked to relay a message onto our heroes, which is as follows:
“Go to the Temple of Rem! See the four Books of Prophecy! When you have seen them all, the secret will be clear! A brave Ra-Seru will acquire a great key, the Star Pearl!”
Yet another cryptic message, but it seems that we are being directed more and more towards Octam, that’s for sure.
There’s a bit more to explore around Vidna.
By checking one of the houses to the southwest, there’s a stairway that leads underground. What’s this all about? An elevator there takes us even deeper. There we find a man named Danpas.
He’s building an underground shelter in the case that the mist comes in. He believes that one day, the windmills will cease to function, and when that happens, nothing will stop the mist from engulfing this town. I’d say this is a bit excessive, but considering what we saw back in Biron Monastery…
Here’s a weapon shop. We got new weapon and armor for Gala. Again, they’re quite expensive. I’m a little hesitant in telling you to buy these equipments we’ve been seeing, because we’ll be finding another town that has even better gear for sale.
Another house here will take us underground to the place where geothermal energy is produced. Here, the windmills are powered by the boiling hot water.
I see treasure down there. Maybe if I take a quick dip…
Nope. Vahn leaps out like you would by placing your hand on a hot stove.
There's a long building here that serves as an entrance to the hot springs. But another place of note here is this.
By talking to this guy, he’ll give us some coins to play with the machine at the corner over there. We the examine the machine and find…
...it’s a slot machine! You know how slot machines work, I don’t think I need to explain much about this. Though, the main jackpot here is lining up the punch or kick icons. That leads to a bonus game that can net you quite a bit of coins.
I’d say save your coins elsewhere. We’ll be finding a place that can net us a lot more coins in a later place.
In the northwest corner of town, we finally find Pepe’s place.
Unfortunately, he’s no frog (though the green shirt may say otherwise), and we deliver Zalan’s message to him. He reads the letter:
“To my dearest Yuma and Pepe: If you are reading this letter, then thankfully you are safe. I am writing you out of concern for your safety. Jeremi was covered in the Mist, but thanks to a brave Ra-Seru we are free at last. I lost my memory when the Mist first came, but now I am completely recovered. I suppose Vidna is covered by the Mist as well. I hope that the madness of the Seru has not possessed you. I have so many things to ask. It has been over 10 years since you left for Vidna, but it seems only like yesterday since we bid farewell, smiling. Yuma, does the ring I gave to you still sparkle? Pepe, how many gems do you know the name of now? I want to be with you. I want to tell you how much I love you. Stay healthy and strong. Until we meet again, I won’t lose hope. Your father, Fat Fingers, Zalan”
FAT. FINGERS. Now that’s a name!
in case anyone thinks I'm making that up
Pepe is relieved to hear that his father is alive and well. He explains that his mother passed away a few years ago, and has been by himself ever since. He asks Vahn and his friends to give his father a keepsake from his mother. With that, we get Yuma’s ring. Let’s quickly deliver that to Fat Fingers- I mean, Zalan.
A quick note: we can actually equip Yuma’s Ring as an accessory!
It raises max MP by 10%. But since we’re gonna be giving it back to Zalan, I don’t think it’s gonna be much use for us.
We return back to Jeremi and deliver the ring to Zalan.
He immediately learns that his wife has passed away, but finds solace in learning that his son is alive and well. His resolve in seeing his son again once the mist is dealt with is strengthened, and he gives Vahn a new accessory for all the trouble: Zalan’s Crown!
This accessory raises AP restore rate by 10%. It’s exactly like the Mettle Ring, just under a different name. I’ll take it though; beats spending 12000 G for another one.
And with that, let’s end things here for now. Not much progress story wise, but we did explore a new town as well as a town we just restored from the mist, so I’d say we got some stuff done. Next time: why don’t we go look for Octam and uncover its secrets? Until then, take care!
