Legend of Legaia - Part 16 - Journey to the East

Welcome back to more Legend of Legaia.  Last time, we defeated Dohati and freed the Sebucus Islands from the mist!  Today, we are going to make our journey to the Karisto Kingdom.  But, before that, I feel we should explore the islands, now that the mist no longer terrorizes the people.

Our first stop is Vidna.  The windmills are still not moving, but with no mist to blow away, it seems this place doesn’t need them anymore.  The tour guide is still there giving out info, but this time, he can give us info about the Karisto Kingdom.  To quickly summarize: the Karisto Kingdom was the heart of civilization in Legaia, and that’s mainly due to the fact that the seru are born in Uru Mais, a place within the kingdom.

uhh

As we talk to the people in Vidna, we see how quickly they’ve returned to their daily lives.  Though now, they’ve changed their opinion on Dampas, from being some crackpot to a hero that saved the people, thanks to his shelter.  Speaking of which, let’s check up on him.

Dampas is still in his shelter, now hiding from the people who call him a hero.  He will give us a new accessory: Chicken Heart.  This gives you a higher success rate of running from battles.  I don’t run that often, so this accessory isn’t very useful to me, but I’ll take it regardless.

In the northern side, there’s a villager that sells a Camera Stone for some money.  This item allows you to take pictures!  Don’t get too excited though: you can only do that by talking to certain characters, and well…

you get to see them in all their low-polygon glory.  A nice novelty item, but that’s about it.

If we check out Pepe’s house, we find that Pepe has moved out.  It seems he’s gone to meet with his father back at Jeremi, now that the mist is gone.
Again, he’s gotta have to fend off those other monsters, but okay.

Why don’t we check out on Pepe, while we’re at it?  Let’s head to Jeremi.

FAT FINGERS AND PEPE, REUNITED ONCE AGAIN

In Zalan’s house, Zalan is planning on travelling to Vidna to see his son, but it turns out he doesn’t need to; Pepe comes through the door!  The father and son are finally reunited, after 10 years!  It’s a happy day.  Pepe gives our heroes a Miracle Water.  Don’t think I went over this item, did I?  Like the other waters, this one is a stat boosting item, but this one boosts all stats.  As you’d expect, this is pretty rare item.

home sweet home

Let’s take a quick trip back to Rim Elm, Vahn’s hometown.  Nothing much has changed since we last visited here, but the main reason why I’m here is for a certain revenge match.

But before that: if you have the Camera Stone, you can talk to Mei and you can take pictures of her.  Again, in that low-polygon glory.  However, by taking these pictures, the camera breaks!

I like to think that Vahn is exclaiming that

Cheap stuff.  I believe you can buy another one back at Vidna, but eh.  I’m fine.

this is totally not a reused screenshot, what are you talking about :)

Now, about that revenge match.  Remember that tree we examined all the way back at part 2?  Remember how horribly mauled Vahn got from that fight?  Well, we’re 26 levels higher, and we got more party members to even the odds.  Check the tree to initiate the fight.

A couple of things in this fight against these bees: you will start the fight ambushed, so the bees will always get the first initiative.  Does Nene keep distracting you every time you fight them or something? Second: there are 4 enemies!  I think this is the only fight in the game where there are more than 3 enemies fighting you.  Third: you cannot use magic.  This isn’t explained until much later, but this is the case because summoning serus in a village could endanger the people around.  The attacking serus, I get, but I don’t see why you have to ban Orb…

I’d write my strategy against these bees, but honestly, I’m simply overpowered at this point that I don’t think I really need to explain what I’m doing.  Just punch the bees until they’re dead.  I will say that if you’re attempting this fight at this point in the game, you’re more than capable of doing this.  I feel you’re expected to attempt this fight around Octam, but these bees made a fool of me.  And I want to return that feeling in full.

By defeating the angry horde of bees, we are rewarded with Honey.  This item is exactly like the Miracle Water: it raises all stats for one party member.  The neat thing is we can fight these bees again and get another Honey.  However, you can only do this to get a maximum of 3 Honeys.

Once you have this Honey, do NOT talk to Nene.

no I didn't

Nene you stinker

She will take your Honey and say she will make some kind of cake.  As far as I know, that’s a straight up lie.  You can give her all the honey you can get and she will horde it and never give it back to you.  Use the honey for yourself and your party members instead.

now entering: Octam

But with that done, let’s head to our actual destination: Octam.  If Saryu’s hunch is correct, the flying cars should be operational.  And judging from the overworld map, there certainly seems to be something different!  That’s a good sign.

yes, 2 people in screenshot = lively

We enter Octam and we already find the place more lively than before.  With the mist gone, the people from underground already migrated back up here.  News travel fast, I guess.

There’s an equipment shop to the door to the left, and we’ll see that they have some new stuff for our heroes.  I’m gonna save my money; we’ll be coming up to another shop pretty soon in the next part.

We can check underground Octam from here as well.  By taking the elevator from the Temple of Rem, we find that most of the people have moved.  However, there are some people who have decided to stay underground.  Seems like they’re used to being underground.  Both sides are safe to live, so I don’t think I can object.

But let’s check out the main reason why we came to Octam: the flying cars.  Head back up and check the red door on the upper floor.  Normally, the flying car to Karisto is off limits due to the mist still present in Karisto, but we’re given a special exception.  An elevator opens for us that leads us to the top of the city, where the flying cars are at.

The conductor tells our heroes that this is a one way ticket to Karisto Kingdom, so make sure to pack some Door of Winds!  Once we’re ready, let’s get on board.

that looks more like a mech than a seru :P

A man with a seru attached behind his back climbs on top of the gondola and jumps off.  The seru transforms into a giant insect like creature!  Hey, this seru looks like the Gargan Roo from FF9.  It even takes passengers from one place to another like it, too!

Huh, that’s another FF9 comparison right there.  This giant seru will carry the gondola from here to Karisto.  Our heroes get on board the gondola, and the flying car embarks.

From the overworld, we see the gondola take off through the skylines.  Oh hey, so that’s what the forks are for.  The skyline takes the gondola away from Sebucus Islands and across the vast sea.

As Vahn, Noa, and Gala are enjoying the ride across the sea, Gala explains something to Vahn he heard while he was still back in the monastery.  Long ago, in the Karisto Kingdom, Sol and Conkram were at war with each other.  Gala suspects that this war had something to do with the mist, as the mist soon followed after the war started.  There seems to be a lot of things we’re gonna uncover once we find Conkram…

The gondola eventually comes to a stop in the middle of the sea.  What’s going on?  We’re nowhere close to Karisto!

So… you may have figured something out with this gondola ride.  If the mist is still present on the Karisto side, then it’s not gonna be possible to make a complete ride to over there without the seru going nuts.  Well, the conductor has a plan.  It won’t necessarily be safe, but it’s our only shot at this.

The conductor explains the plan to our heroes, and tells them to hold on tight.

The seru continues to move, and starts picking up speed.  The seru and gondola start moving fast, and when the conductor finds they’ve got enough speed, the seru detaches from the gondola and the engineers fall into the sea, with the gondola blasting its way across the rails.

"Haha, we're hundreds of miles away from land!"

Hopefully, those guys can swim good!

"No!  Hit the brakes!!"

"I can't STOP IT!!!"

Meanwhile, the gondola is travelling at breakneck speed, approaching our destination: the Karisto Kingdom.  However, there ain’t no breaks on this gondola we’re at!  Our heroes crash into the nearest station, blacking out.

Our heroes wake up to a familiar voice.  It’s Cara, the thief we met back at Octam!  She seems to have helped our heroes out of the flying car.  But what is she doing here?  Before we could get an answer from her, our heroes are interrupted by a shadow approaching them.

Their attention is drawn to something in the sky: a giant floating castle spewing mist from underneath.  This must be the Mist Generator creating the mist in Karisto.

The castle floats away from them.  Gala then asks the question he’s been meaning to ask Cara: how is she able to walk freely in the mist without a ra-seru?  Cara has no idea what a ra-seru is, but she says she’s gotten by thanks to her good luck charm.

MORE T-POSING NOA

Noa takes a look at her charm and realizes that it’s actually a ra-seru egg!  That may explain some things.  Cara leaves before our heroes could learn anything more about her.

Well folks, it was a rough ride, but we finally made it to Karisto.  Next time: we explore the kingdom and see where we go from there!
