Legend of Legaia - Part 25 - Rogue's Legacy
Welcome back to more Legend of Legaia. Last time: we went through hell on earth. Today, we continue our search for the Nemesis Gem needed to gain access to Jette’s Fortress.
However, it seems like we can’t really get any progress at this point. Let’s head to this inn and rest up. The price for resting is usually 10000G, but since tomorrow’s a special day, we can stay for free! That was a bit scary, with that price. You don’t get much business around here, do you?
Oh yeah, a quick correction: you do not lose the Seru Flame after using it back in present Conkram, so I can equip it whenever I can!
The next day comes, so let’s head outside. A crowd’s already gathered in the middle of the town. A large glass cylinder is placed in the center. Our heroes see King Nebular announcing a new weapon that Cort has completed.
This new weapon that’s supposed to help the fight against Sol is called the Mist. Oh no. This can only be a recipe for disaster.
A demonstrator, equipped with a seru, walks into the cylinder, and it closes up behind him. Zeto goes on to explain that the mist is used to amplify the strength of the seru, and a machine underneath the cylinder will cover the man in mist.
and here's the first time we see Cort
Under the demonstration, you see Jette and Cort turning on the machine, and the mist starts flowing from inside. The mist rises up to the cylinder where everyone’s watching.
Our heroes watch in disbelief as they watch them try to weaponize such a dangerous force. Meanwhile, the machine underneath starts going out of control!
More and more mist starts flowing inside the machine. With no way to stop the machine, it explodes. The overabundance of mist turns the man inside the cylinder into the seru-human monster we’ve seen all too often, and breaks out of the cylinder, attacking the townspeople! The mist leaks out from the broken cylinder, turning people wearing seru into the same monsters, turning the whole situation into an outbreak.
Noa tells Vahn and Gala that we need to stop the mist. Perhaps we can do so in the underground lab. This doesn’t seem like a good idea in terms of time travelling shenanigans, but we gotta at least check it out.
The whole town’s covered in mist, but despite that, some stores are open! The item store still sells items here, and you can rest in the inn. The weapon store is closed, however. The monsters you’ll encounter here are Kemaro lvl 2 and Slippery, serus we’ve encountered in present day Conkram. Our main goal is to reach the castle, so let’s head there.
In the castle, we’ll find all the doors locked, so we can’t really explore around at this time. Our only open route is the stairs leading downward to the lab. Our heroes eventually reach the lab, and find a hole from where the machine once was.
Gala exclaims that it looks like Ra-Seru eggs are coming out from that hole. The Ra-Serus explain that this hole leads to Rogue’s Tower, within the Seru-Kai, and those eggs are actually alter egos of Rogue. They also explain that the only way to stop the mist from here is to cut off the source itself. However, this is a one-way trip, so you cannot return back until you finish the job. Once you’re ready, let’s head inside!
Our heroes fall into the wormhole leading to Rogue’s Tower. Our heroes see more pieces of Rogue flying against their direction. Those are Rogue Fragments, according to the Ra-Serus. From this point on, however, the Ra-Serus explain to our heroes that they must stay silent, as Rogue can hear the Ra-Serus communicate to them. Our heroes eventually arrive in Rogue’s Tower.
well this looks like a normal looking dungeon- I TAKE THAT BACK
Rogue’s Tower houses the evil Rogue, the Ra-Seru that betrayed Tieg, and the progenitor of the mist. It seems like a standard looking dungeon, but periodically, the dungeon changes to a more horrific appearance! There’s something more sinister to this place than at first glance.
We’ll face some familiar serus here, but a new enemy we’ll face here is this Spoon lvl 2. Honestly not much different from the first Spoon we’ve fought, but if you haven’t gotten a chance to capture this seru (for some reason), here’s you chance to get it again.
When the dungeon changes appearance, it also changes what serus you’ll encounter as well! You can encounter this Gola Gola lvl 2 for example. Not too remarkable a foe. Not very strong, and neither its magic at this point in the game. Though, if you haven’t caught this one, you can now.
That’s really all there is for new foes. As for the dungeon itself, we got a warp maze. These blue circles will warp you from one circle to another. It’s a bit hard for me to tell you how to navigate from point A to point B, but it shouldn’t be terribly difficult. Most of the warps are pretty linear, and just keep track of which circle you came from.
In the first floor, I found a Magic Armband, which raises max MP by 25%. It’s alright, but I think I’ll keep the Spirit Jewel.
Eventually, you’ll reach a giant circle with markings in it. Step on it and we’ll be transported to the next floor.
The next floor is more of the same, but from where we start, there’s a warp that’ll take us right to the giant warp circle to the next floor. However, stepping on it will do nothing. Well, let’s explore the rest of the floor.
In this floor are these sets of crystals. These are the Rogue Fragments. By examining it, it transforms into a familiar looking boss:
it’s Berserker! It’s returned, now in its lvl 2 form! However, you are much, much stronger now, and despite being upgraded from its previous form, Berserker is an absolute pushover. This fight should not take long at all. By defeating the Berserker, the Rogue Fragment vanishes, and we can continue on our way.
Another Rogue Fragment can be found here, and it takes the form of Caruban. This fight is even easier than your first encounter with it. I don’t think I need to write up tips on how to beat it. The Rogue Fragment also vanishes, and with both of them out of the way, the giant warp circle starts glowing. By destroying the 2 Rogue Fragments in this floor, we’ve opened the way to the next floor. Head back to that warp point and take it to head to the next floor.
We’re greeted by a room with some healing water on both sides. Take them to restore your HP and MP. This next floor seems pretty linear with its warps, but this place has a gimmick to it that it doesn’t explain outright.
you'll be sent to this room if you don't do it correctly
Occasionally, you may find yourself warping to the middle room, with a warp that leads you back to the beginning. The gimmick with this floor is that the warp circles will take you back to the beginning of the maze if the tower is in its flesh appearance. So only take the warps when the tower looks normal.
Much like the previous floor, there are 2 Rogue Fragments that you need to beat up to open the way to the next floor. They’ll take the form of Caruban and Berserker again, in their lvl 3 forms. They’re only a little bit stronger, but nothing you can’t deal with. When both of them are defeated, the wall will open the way to the next warp circle and a save point.
A reminder before you take this save point: you cannot leave this dungeon until you defeat the boss up ahead. Now granted, the next boss isn’t terribly difficult, but if you’re worried about being trapped here, I suggest making another save file. Once you’re ready, head into the warp circle.
I like putting these 2 screenshots back to back |
Our heroes reach yet another floor of Rogue’s Tower. Gala notices an evil presence here, but there’s nothing to be found. That’s when it appears: Rogue, the master of the tower! It takes the form of the crystals we’ve fought along the way. If we can destroy Rogue, the mist covering Conkram should disappear. Let’s fight!
We’re facing off against Rogue! The creator of the Mist, the Ra-Seru that betrayed Tieg, and may as well be the Legaia equivalent of the fallen angel Lucifer! And… it’s one of the easiest bosses in the game??? No really; it has a very easy to follow attack pattern that you can exploit.
Rogue has 3 special attacks: Rogue Thunder, Rogue Wind, and Rogue Flame. These all do heavy damage to all party members (about 1500+ if you’re not spirited up, I believe). However, they’re all telegraphed by Rogue using Element Change on the prior turn. Rogue doesn't have any regular attacks either. So, what this means is that Rogue will only attack every second turn.
All this fight really boils down to is: spirit everyone up on the turn Rogue attacks, and heal/attack on the next free turn. That’s all you really need to do in this fight. Spoon should heal up all the damage Rogue throws at you, should you spirit in that turn. Meanwhile, for attacks, hit it with your best attacks. Use Miracle Arts if you got them. Rogue has quite a bit of HP, but you should eventually take it down.
Rogue shatters in front of our heroes, and the job is done! Now, they encounter the next problem: how do they get out of here? Rogue’s Tower starts crumbling all around them, and the room around our heroes grows darker and darker. It seems like there’s no way to escape.
That’s when our Ra-Seru friends break their silence and tell our heroes that they will return them back to their world. Our heroes float upward into the light, and leave the realm of the Seru-Kai.
Back at Conkram, the mist is indeed gone. The king begins to reprimand Cort for his major blunder; even he realizes how terrible and dangerous the mist is.
Just then, our heroes pop up from the hole! They inform the king that the mist has been cut off. Nebular seems to take it exceedingly well, and asks our heroes to discuss what just happened.
Before he leaves however, Nebular notices a seru behind Cort’s back. He quickly dismisses it, and leaves with our heroes.
Cort, however, isn’t bothered by his father’s words, as we see him smirking…
Back in the throne room, King Nebular rewards our heroes the requested Nemesis Gem! He has no idea why we would ask such a thing, as these gems are a waste product from building the Gate of Hell, but does not question it. Cort tries to protest against this, but Nebular tells him to shut up. We now have the Nemesis Gem, at long last!
We can equip the Nemesis Gem as an accessory, by the way. It raises encounter rate, so I don’t think it’s a particularly useful accessory. Anyway, with Conkram restored, we can explore the place again and talk to some people here. Some people are thinking twice about the mist. Here are some small highlights:
well, be careful what you wish for I don't like this clam here - it frightens me
We can also head back to the underground lab and talk to Cort.
He thanks us for saving Conkram, but immediately calls our seru disgusting and tells us to leave. Talk about a 180 shift!
Before we leave, head to the castle rooftop (from the left door behind the throne room).
Queen Minea is there and thanks our heroes for saving her as well as her child. As soon as she says this however, Noa wells up in tears. She’s about to tell her mother who she is, but Gala stops her. Terra reminds Noa that she shouldn’t tell her who she is. Gala tries to cover up by saying that Minea reminds Noa of her mother.
Minea gives Noa a ring for to remember by. She then explains that she is worried about her son Cort, saying that he hasn’t been the same ever since he started researching the mist.
And with that, we should be on our way. Minea’s Ring can be equipped as an accessory; it raises max HP by 25%. A pretty good accessory right here. To head back, let’s go back to the room of mirrors. …you know, do I really wanna go back? Conkram in the past seems so nice, and it’s totally better than going back to whatever hellspot that place is, you know? You know?
No?
Okay then… let’s head back to the present.
As our heroes are about to leave, Noa realizes something: Cort is her brother. Well this may get awkward. Despite that, our heroes need to return back to their time and inform Minea in the present that they got the Nemesis Gem.
Meanwhile, Cort, along with Jette and Zora are plotting something. Cort managed to retrieve a mist specimen, and figures out that he can make his own mist. Jette proposes that they would need a machine of some size to generate that mist… you know where this is going. They’ve also got their eyes on Ratayu and their giant seru development, aka Juggernaut. Despite putting an end to the mist to Conkram, we have only delayed the inevitable. Cort’s actions in spreading the world in mist proceeds, as history ordains.
oh god no |
Alright, we’ve returned to the present. This gross state of Conkram. All sense of serenity I’ve felt for this place is gone now. Head out of the door and let’s talk to Minea.
Our heroes meet with her, and she confirms that Cort, the mastermind behind the mist, is indeed her son, as well as Noa’s brother. She explains that 2 seru were left after the incident. One is the Sim-Seru that eventually engulfed this kingdom, and the other, she believes, is a piece of a Rogue Fragment.
Cort took that fragment and was granted great knowledge. With the Rogue Fragment, he was responsible for creating the Mist Generators, as well as a multitude of Sim-Serus. Noa, determined, tells her mother that she will stop the Mist Generator and save everyone in Conkram.
With that, let’s get out of here. Hopefully, we can return back to Conkram when it’s not a hellscape as it is now. But for now, I’ll end things here. We got our Nemesis Gem, and we’re ready to storm the final Mist Generator! And we will do that next time!
