Legend of Legaia - Part 27 - Beyond the Mist
Welcome back to more Legend of Legaia. Last time, we infiltrated Jette’s Absolute Fortress, home of the mist generator plaguing Karisto Kingdom, and today, we are going to put an end to it!
Before you head onwards, make sure you’re well equipped. We got a boss incoming, and it would be a good idea to get ready. Once you’re set, let’s get a move on!
A giant marble corridor greets us. Looks like they really wanna get fancy with us here. At the end of the corridor, open the door, and we should finally reach the room with the Mist Generator.
Our heroes run to the generator, and get ready to use their powers to stop it. But before they can focus their powers, Noa starts acting up.
Noa's head starts hurting, and starts writhing on the ground in pain. Soon after, the voice in her head stops, and behind our heroes, he finally appears: Cort, the mastermind behind the mist.
He seems to remember our heroes from our first encounter in the past. Cort also seems to believe how the mist is salvation, and that Noa’s parents are happy as they are. Noa isn’t having any of that. Cort explains that he attacked Rim Elm, the Snowdrift Cave, and Voz Forest to lure out the Ra-Serus, but didn’t expect our heroes to join forces with them.
He decides that he will kill our heroes, regardless. Let’s fight!
Well, folks, this is it. Our journey has been long, but we finally made it here. We’re facing the leader of the evil forces of the mist, Cort!
Cort will immediately start the fight by setting up a Mystic Shield. This is a barrier that completely blocks normal attacks, so only arts and magic will do damage to him. One thing to note about this move is that this outspeeds even the Speed Chain! So you can’t even make any quick potshots at him before he does that. Another thing to note (and something I learned in this fight) is that the shield halves magic damage. Your best course of action is to hit him with hyper arts or miracle arts. That said, I was quite surprised that Cort was suspectable to speed debuffs.
Cort doesn’t have any regular attacks; he’ll just hit you with special attacks. His most common attack is Guilty Cross. He sends a cross shaped light onto one party member, dealing about 1000 damage.
Another attack he’ll use is Mystic Circle. He’ll create a circle on the ground with markings on it, with its flash dealing about 800-900 damage to everyone.
As said before, use arts to deal with Cort’s shield. I went ahead and gave Noa some buffs. Fury Boost came in handy, as she had War Soul and Mettle Gem to spam miracle arts. Eventually, the shield will break, and we can attack Cort normally. However, once the shield is down, make sure to keep everyone’s HPs as high as you can! At this point, Cort can use a very dangerous special attack: Evil Seru Magic.
yes, this attack deserves all these screenshots |
With this attack, Cort will straight up summon Juggernaut to attack everyone. A summoning circle appears below and above us, with Juggernaut popping out from the circle, dealing damage to everyone. Eventually, it pops its ugly head in front of us and fires a beam on our party. This whole attack does about 2000 damage to everyone. This attack is hard to survive unless you’re spiriting.
With Cort’s shield down, magic can do regular damage to him again. Hit Cort with everything you got, keep an eye on everyone’s HPs, and eventually, the master of the mist will finally fall.
Instead of the usual winning animation, Noa will look remorseful after fighting off her own brother.
Cort is in
disbelief, as he finds himself defeated.
He says that he and the Mist Generator are connected as one, so the
generator will die along with him. And
true enough: the generator slows its movements.
The fortress begins to rumble, and Cort is thrown off balance, falling across the guardrail, and plummeting to the Lake of Mist underneath. The Mist Generator crumbles before our heroes, and falls into pieces.
Noa is heartbroken over what happened to her brother. However, we don’t have time to grieve, as the fortress is starting to fall apart!
Our heroes try to escape from where they came from, but boulders start falling onto the passageway, blocking the path. This is bad… we got no other way around! The time starts counting down before the imminent destruction of the fortress. What can we do?
Suddenly, a nearby pipe opens up, and Cara comes out! She leads our heroes into the pipe.
yeah that doesn't look good |
Vahn watches the bottom as a great ball of light starts growing underneath. No time to waste, let’s get outta here. Our heroes follow Cara through the pipeline, and manage to escape the incoming blast through the skin of their teeth!
Vahn wakes up, and the first thing he sees is our heroes and Cara, outside of the fortress. They managed to make it out alive. However, this begs the question: how did Cara even come here? Cara answers this by calling down Grantes, now with Seru Wings.
It looks like Grantes is now accepted by the Soren once again! But Grantes explains that he’s decided to return his wings and live earthbound. And with that, Cara and Grantes fly away.
But more importantly: we just destroyed the last mist generator! All the mist in the world of Legaia is gone! Now peace will finally return in the world. Noa wants to return to Conkram and see her mother and father now that the mist is gone.
We can head back into the fortress, and find more rocks blocking the way. Yup, looks like it’s all busted. You can still use the healing spring to restore your HP and MP.
Before we head any further, make sure to unequip Noa and Gala’s accessories. You’ll see why soon. Don’t worry; they’re not going away! We’ll give them back their stuff later.
Now, let’s head back to Conkram, and… why is the clam shut?
Oh no.
Our heroes reach where Conkram once was and find that everything is gone. Noa calls out desperately for her mother and father, but hears no response. The mist is gone, but what’s going on?
Ozma explains that the sim-seru engulfing Conkram could only survive within the mist, perhaps due to its long exposure to it. When we destroyed the last mist generator, the sim-seru died… along with all of Conkram.
Noa calls out to Terra, asking why she didn’t tell her anything about it, but Terra remains silent. She knew of Conkram’s fate if the mist disappeared, and perhaps informing our heroes of this would complicate things further. Gala suspects that the king and queen knew of this as well, but told our heroes to stop the mist, regardless. They were doomed from the start.
Noa lashes
out on Terra, believing that she lied to her, and starts crying. It’s a bittersweet end to our journey…
Our heroes return to Rim Elm. They are hailed as heroes who saved the world from the mist. The next day comes, and it seems that things are finally returning to normal.
Vahn wakes up to Nene’s bickering. Well, while we’re back home, let’s meet with everyone again!
It seems that we’ve attracted some people to this village, as well. This person here says she’s from Sebucus Islands. People all over the world are now visiting this place, also because the mist is now gone.
There are also construction workers tearing down the wall, now that there’s no need for it.
Let’s check up on Mei. As we’re about to enter her house, Maya steps out and comments on how Vahn looks more mature. She leaves, and we can check inside and see Mei.
Apparently, she’s starting her own tailor business. Looks like things are going back to the daily routine here.
We can also talk to Maya here. She asks if Songi is doing alright. Well… I guess so, in one way or another. It seems that she doesn’t know what happened to him in our journey. By the way… where did he go? Last we seen him, he was back at the floating castle.
Meanwhile, we can talk to Tetsu again, the Biron monk who taught Vahn the basics of combat from the very beginning of our journey. We can spar with Tetsu and get into an optional boss fight. Be warned though: this is your only opportunity to fight Tetsu! If you progress any further in the plot, you will not be able to fight him! Tetsu reminds Vahn to not use serus in the fight, as we’re in Rim Elm. And with that, let’s fight!
Tetsu is hard, and your success will rely more on how well prepared you are before you enter the fight. Tetsu has very high speed and agility. He can outspeed Vahn, and do up to 9 hits, easily dealing over 1000 damage per turn. I brought in Defender Chain to block his attacks, War Soul to do extra damage, and Speed Chain so I can get the first initiative. This is why I said to remove everyone else's accessories: so Vahn can have them for this fight. Keep your HP high, and unleash your miracle arts when the opportunity is right. Tetsu doesn’t have a lot of HP, but the sheer damage he does makes it hard to safely do damage.
By beating Tetsu, he awards Vahn with another Mettle Gem! This accessory’s great, but having 2 of them in our inventory is even better. Though… do we really need it? I mean, we defeated the mist, and all that.
So, where’s Noa and Gala? They’re still around in Rim Elm. If we check by the elder’s house, we can find Noa there.
Noa is still upset over everything that happened. She lost her entire family that day. Noa says that she can’t trust Terra anymore, and she hasn’t responded ever since. She exclaims to Vahn that she doesn’t want to feel this way; she doesn’t want to hate Terra. You know, despite the basic vocab, the way they write Noa here is quite nuanced. They show that Noa has these conflicting emotions, but she doesn’t know how to deal with them.
Meanwhile, Gala is at the Genesis Tree. Gala ponders about his journey with Vahn and Noa. However, something is still bothering him. He is of course referring to Songi. The mist is gone, but Songi is still nowhere to be found. Whatever happened to him?
Well… be careful what you wish for, because someone comes and tells Vahn and Gala that a man with spiky hair arrived in town, looking for us. His name: Songi!
Gala immediately reacts and asks the kid where he is. He seems to be at the entrance of the village. Whenever Songi’s around, bad things are bound to happen, so let’s check out what he has in store this time.
Vahn, Noa, and Gala gather at the entrance and find Songi. Songi acts nice towards the villagers, but our heroes are skeptical and ask what he’s doing here. Songi still plays along, getting us nowhere. Has he really changed his ways? Is he going to apologize for all he’s done?
Of course not; Songi merely laughs at the notion, and jumps and fires a beam onto the villagers! Tetsu tries to fight him off, but Songi immediately swats him away like a fly.
Songi explains that he merely knocked out the villagers, as it would do no good if they died before Juggernaut arrived. Juggernaut?! But it was destroyed along with Jette’s Fortress!
Songi mocks our heroes’ train of logic, because it turns out: Juggernaut is still alive! As a Sim-Seru, it merely merged with a human host to unlock its true potential. When Songi mentions a human merging with Juggernaut, Noa immediately realizes who it was: her brother Cort. Songi tells them that Juggernaut is approaching here.
The sky blackens; the terrifying seru must be coming! There’s no time to escape; the ra-serus tell our heroes to focus their energies into a barrier.
All they can do is watch as the dreaded sim-seru comes…
Juggernaut tears down the remainder of the wall, and lets out a roar. Red tendrils come out of its carapace armor and tears all of Rim Elm. And the next thing we see…
Rim Elm is gone. And what has replaced it is a hellish landscape, just like Conkram.
The sky has turned darker. The ground is completely covered in flesh. And in front of our heroes is a giant deformed head of Juggernaut. Songi laughs at our heroes’ predicament, and tells Vahn that everyone that he knew and loved in Rim Elm are now a part of Juggernaut, much like the people in Conkram.
Noa loses it, seeing another town get engulfed by a Sim-Seru, and tries to rush at Songi, only to be knocked out. Just to add an extra level of spite, Songi puts up a barrier around Juggernaut’s head.
There’s no way to save everyone at this rate. Songi goes on to explain that Juggernaut will continue to spread until it engulfs the whole world. Songi’s overbloated ego has now turned into a God complex, as he calls himself the new ruler of the world, and cannot be bothered dealing with our heroes.
He then declares that he must leave to conquer another world. Another world…? Gala catches on and realizes that Songi’s referring to the Seru-Kai! Does his lust for power know no end?!
Songi jumps into a portal, and disappears in it. How could all of this have happened? Noa asks why the Genesis Tree didn’t protect them.
Terra explains to Noa that the tree lost its power due to something happening in the Seru-Kai. Saving Rim Elm must wait; if Songi really is intent on taking over the Seru-Kai, the Ra-Serus will lose their lives, and all hope would truly be lost.
There’s only one way to reach the Seru-Kai, and that’s through Uru Mais. And so, our heroes must set off for the ruins of Uru Mais.
Well folks… things have turned for the worse. Our journey is not over just yet. We must stop Songi’s wretched plans before he causes any more harm. And we will do that next time.
